I would say that my passage through EPGE has been important for my professional and personal life for three main reasons: the acquired knowledge and the experience of having written a MA dissertation and a PhD thesis, which gave me the fundamentals that have guided my professional activities in the Central Bank of Brazil. The discipline that school requires from students gave me also a unique experience, that has been very useful all the time. I must not forget my friends at EPGE, including classmates, the professors and staff.
EPGE´s MA course was essential for my academic background. EPGE has a long tradition regarding to formal rigor, with serves as an excellent base for the study of various areas. I am proud to belong to the group of former students of EPGE and I am enormously grateful to school and its professor for stimulating my deeper study in Economics and for provided many of the techniques that I use in my current research.
Everyone in Brazil know that EPGE is a leading institution on teaching and research in Economics. Few places around the world provide an environment so suitable for intelectual development in this field. My time on EPGE is representative of this situation: when I started MA course I had serious deficiencies on Math. I was saved by my colleagues and professor, all patient and generous, crucial for me to overcome the difficulties and develop me as an economist. I have much gratitude for this institution for having encouraged me, even in times in wich my progress was slow and uncertain.
The EPGE teaches each one to seek their own ways, choose what you really want to study. We had this freedom and also access to get in touch with the professors at any time. There was a lot of interaction with professors, which greatly enriched the learning process.
EPGE has given an important contribution to the country’s efficiency and success, not only for the generation of ideas and the development of Economic Theory but also for staff training, which is, by the way, one of FGV’s missions. You may find graduates from EPGE on financial markets and government, including Ministry of Finance, Central Bank and various states, as well as other areas within corporative world. EPGE’s quality on both teaching and research has contributed not only for the excellence and recognition in Brazil, but also for more sophisticated economic policies. This is essential for a country development, addressing the growing complexity of its economy.
I started at EPGE in 1979, just after graduate in an engineering course. EPGE already was a reference during undergrad and I thought that FGV should open new horizons for me. By good luck as I started, Professor Mario Henrique Simonsen left the government and came back to School as a Dean. His presence was a kind of milestone to me; due his orientation I entered into financial markets. I consider EPGE a reference institution regarding preparation of excellent professionals.
EPGE taught me the value of analytical rigor and the importance of empirical evidence to support theoretical arguments, making me an enthusiast of Economics. Such teachings remain with me along my life as an executive, allowing me to make higher quality decisions.
